Who We Are

SW Music is a private music studio in Vancouver offering personalized piano, theory, history, and musicianship such as ear training and sight reading exam prep.

Students are supported with a learning path that changes as their interests and abilities grow, from their earliest musical experiences to advanced studies.

We believe that students learn best when they are appropriately challenged and proud of their progress. No two musical journeys look alike, and that is the magic of music education.

MEET YOUR TEACHER

Meet Season

Season Wang is a pianist, educator, and the founder of SW Music. She holds a Bachelor of Music with Distinction from the University of Victoria and has taught many students from beginner to advanced.

Her teaching combines strong musical foundations with flexible instruction. Season has extensive experience creating fun and personalized lessons while supporting students with different interests, goals, and learning profiles. Her background also includes academic tutoring, classroom support, youth programming, conducting, and practical experience with orchestral instruments.

Season’s goal is to help students become confident, thoughtful, and independent musicians, not simply to teach them how to play one piece at a time.

Getting Started

Beginning lessons is simple.

01.

Tell us about the student

Complete the inquiry form with the student’s age, experience, interests, and any goals or concerns you would like to discuss.

02.

Meet for a first lesson

Meet Season, explore the piano, and experience what lessons are like. This also allows the studio to assess the student’s current level and recommend an appropriate program.

03.

Start your musical journey

A strong music education is built through many kinds of experiences.

Depending on the student and program, learning at SW Music may include:

  • Recitals and informal performances

  • Festival and examination preparation

  • Duets and collaborative projects

  • Composition and improvisation

  • Listening and musical analysis

  • Theory, history, and ear training

  • Practice planning and goal setting

  • Student portfolio and performance recordings

04.

Have fun!

Participation in formal examinations, festivals, and performances is encouraged when it supports the student’s goals, but it is never treated as the only meaningful measure of progress.

Fun Beginnings and Strong Foundations

Music lessons should be more than learning pieces for exams, practicing them hundreds of times, and then never seeing it again.

At SW Music, students learn how to find enjoyment in music. With skills on how to practise effectively, how to express themselves with confidence, and how to play for fun, lessons bring together technique, listening, music reading, creativity, theory, and performance so that students can become passionate and independent musicians.

Some students come with ambitious goals involving examinations, festivals, or advanced repertoire. Others simply want an encouraging place to learn music they love. Both paths are celebrated here.

SW Music Benefits

Experienced and Fun Music Instruction

Season brings extensive teaching experience together with formal training in piano performance, theory, history, and music education. Students receive knowledgeable instruction at every age, from their very first notes, to advanced repertoire.

Lessons Are Designed Around the Student

Lessons are shaped around each student’s age, personality, learning style, interests, and goals while still providing the structure needed for meaningful progress. Musical success comes in all shapes and sizes!

Strong Foundations, but Flexible Teaching

Students learn strong technique, rhythm, music reading, ear training, theory, and effective practice habits. It is not only about exams and playing the same songs over and over again. A strong musical foundation provides the student the freedom to learn more independently as they grow older, explore different styles, and take on more challenging music.

Smarter, More Effective, and Purposeful Practice

Students are taught how to identify a problem, choose an appropriate practice strategy, listen critically, and evaluate the result. This important skill applies in life as well. It is focused and detailed work that guides students on the “why” behind it, and for the students themselves to discover the why (with teacher guidance, of course!)

A Complete and Fulfilling Musical Education

Piano lessons are connected to listening, history, theory, creativity, ensemble playing, performance, and musical interpretation. Students don’t just learn how to play the notes, they learn how to appreciate life through music. Whether it’s relaxing to music after a long day, or sharing the joy of music with the community, strong musical knowledge and musical experiences opens doors.

A Studio That Can Grow With Your Child

A young student’s needs change over time. SW Music supports playful early learning, formal piano study, examination preparation, advanced theory, performance coaching, and recreational music making.

Music Lessons With Direction and Flexibility

Students do not have to choose between enjoying music and learning it properly.

A student may prepare for an RCM examination while also learning a favourite song. A beginner may use games and movement while developing accurate rhythm and secure technique. An advanced student may study interpretation, analysis, performance psychology, and efficient practice methods.

The destination may change but the underlying skills continue to grow.

Complete Care for Your Piano

SW Music families also have access to trusted piano tuning, maintenance, cleaning, and repair through Caleb’s Piano Care & Repair. Current students receive $25 off piano tuning, making it easier to keep their instrument in good condition and support consistent progress between lessons.

Our Programs

Piano Lessons

Students develop technique, music reading, listening skills, rhythm, expression, theory, creativity, and effective practice habits. Repertoire may include classical music, contemporary music, arrangements, duets, examination selections, and other pieces chosen by the student.

Music Theory, History, and Musicianship

For students who want to complete their RCM theory requirements or understand music theory more.

Lessons are available in music theory, harmony, counterpoint, analysis, history, ear training, and examination preparation. More complicated material, especially in Harmony and Counterpoint, are broken down into manageable steps. Practical examples, organized notes, and targeted exercises are provided to help students study more effectively.

RCM, Festival, and Performance Preparation

Focused coaching for students preparing for RCM examinations, festivals, auditions, recitals, and other performances.

Preparation includes repertoire selection, technical development, interpretation, performance readiness, mock performances, practice strategies, and support with managing performance nerves.

Achievement is important, but so is the process. Students learn how to thoroughly prepare their pieces, and perform with greater confidence and independence.

EARLY YEARS. COMING LATER.

Music begins before the first piano lesson.

Young children can develop musical awareness through movement, listening, singing, matching, and playful sound exploration. These resources (coming soon!) will give busy families simple activities to do with their children, with no musical training from the parents required.
